If you aren't familiar with Speakaboos.com, it's time to do so. This fun new website will entertain your children in a safe online environment as well as spark their imagination with illustrations, artwork, and fun at-home projects. Best of all? You can enjoy it for free!
Speakaboos contains a bountiful assortment of classic children's fairytales, fables, folk songs and more. It's easy to use, as all you need to do is browse through the library, choose the story your child wants, and click. Like a book, beautiful illustrations appear as well as the words to the story to assist in literacy development and beginning reading.
Speakaboos has partnered up with a variety of celebrities that narrate each story. John Krasinski, Clay Aiken, Kevin Bacon, Kelly Ripa, and many others provide the voice for the classics and give each one new life. In addition, you can opt to purchase an individual track (story) or the album (which is the entire collection of stories). The tracks are $0.99 and albums are $8.99. Part of the proceeds of each sale goes towards two charities, National Education Association and The Creative Coalition.
Another fun aspect of Speakaboos is that you can down download art projects and recipes that your child can complete at home. There are various activities, like making a wand to go along with the story of Cinderella, a birdhouse for 'The Nightingale,' printable coloring pages, and yummy, easy-to-make recipes like 'Little Bunny Foo Foo' cupcakes.
There's much more on Speakaboos to check out, including a 'Record Your Own' story that lets you record a reading for your child. Of course, while the website is quite fun and will undoubtedly amuse your child for a long time, nothing can replace the magic that comes along with reading to your own child yourself. But for those times when you can't (the witching hour of 4:30ish pm? Prepping dinner?), then Speakaboos will do just fine!
