AI_NEWS~ Royal role for American Idol star?

RTÉ.ie Entertainment: Lambert - Sang with Queen in final
Lambert - Sang with Queen in final

Royal role for American Idol star?

'American Idol' runner-up Adam Lambert has been linked with the singer slot in Queen.

Billboard reports that Lambert sang with Queen on the final of the TV show last week.

In an email interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Queen guitarist Brian May said that he and drummer Roger Taylor wanted to have a "meaningful conversation" with Lambert.

"It's not like we, as Queen, would rush into coalescing with another singer just like that. It isn't that easy. But I'd certainly like to work with Adam. That is one amazing instrument he has there," said May.

AI_NEWS~ American Idol winner on a cloud: 'I'm doing the thing I love the most'

American Idol winner on a cloud: 'I'm doing the thing I love the most'

Posted on Sunday, May 24, 2009

Kris Allen can't remember the last concert he attended at Alltel Arena.

At least not now, during a 10-minute Friday callback to the home state's newspaper wedged between other American Idol publicity demands with a Fox representative monitoring the phone line.

"I know in high school I saw Creed there ..." says the soft-spoken 23-year-old Conway singer "running on fumes and energy drinks" between thought pauses, adding there had to be more recent shows. He is drawing a blank; he hasn't had much time to sleep, breathe or reflect in the two days since the season finale of Fox's phenomenon ended with him jubilant and drop-jawed.

But he's well aware of the next performance he'll experience at the North Little Rock venue - his own. On July 25, Allen will take the Alltel Arena stage with other show finalists for a stop of the 50-city American Idol Live! Tour.

Last July at the Louisville, Ky., auditions Allen, along with his brother Daniel tried out for the show and nearly didn't when they arrived late. He never anticipated how drastically that day - and a year - would change everything.

"My life was pretty low-key," says the former business major at the University of Central Arkansas, about what he was doing last year at this time. "I went to class - most of the time. And I just hung out with my friends. I was getting ready to be married, planning a wedding, spending time with my fiancee. Just hanging out more than anything."

And just hanging out, he says, is what he misses more than anything right now, after being consumed with the show, dating back to Hollywood Week that took place last October. The show's eighth season began airing in January with weekly live competition and results shows taking place since February.

"But I'm so happy right now," he says. "I'm doing the thing I love the most. I can't complain."

Terms like "dark horse," "upset" and "underdog" have been used to describe the subdued soft-rocker Allen's victory over flashy wailer Adam Lambert, a 27-year-old from San Diego. And Allen says he too was surprised.

"It felt really crazy," he says, when his name was announced by host Ryan Seacrest. "I was shocked. I felt a little numb. I didn't know what to feel."

He says he would have been just as happy for Lambert - his friend and Idol mansion roommate - to win by the most viewer phone and text-message votes.

"We told the other he deserved it all [Wednesday]. I don't think it mattered to either one of us who won," Allen says.

The same couldn't be said for Allen's Arkansas backers - those who turned out for the singer's home visit appearances, attended watch parties and dedicated hours to dialing in support.

He's thankful to his "amazing" fan base, saying with a laugh, "The whole state is crazy."

Securing the Idol title doesn't mean everything. Sure, country singer Carrie Underwood, who won top honors during the show's fourth season, earned $14 million in the past year - the most of all show contestants - according to Forbes magazine's recent ranking of the top Idol earners. But next on the list at $5 million is Jennifer Hudson, who was seventh place during season three; the winner of that season, Fantasia Barrino, didn't make the list.

How much success Idol status will mean for Allen remains to be seen. But for now, it means a wealth of exposure. He's visited with everyone from Jay Leno to Ellen DeGeneres to Larry King. Today he'll head to New York for more television interviews.

He says he's enjoying the fame even if he hasn't fully grasped the enormity of it: "We're still in the bubble just a little bit. It definitely feels huge, but I don't know if it's feeling as huge as it really is right now."

Two of Allen's songs - his take on Kanye West's "Heartless" and his first single "No Boundaries" - were two of iTunes top 10 downloaded songs as of Saturday afternoon. Allen and Lambert struggled with their live performances of "No Boundaries," a coronation song for the winner co-written by Idol judge Kara DioGuardi, that critics panned as cliche and unsuitable for the singers.

"The song is definitely not something I would have written. I'm not sure it's something even Kara was excited about writing," he says, explaining that the song had to meet certain criteria.

But he says he's pleased with the studio version of the single that he heard for the first time Thursday night after it was released earlier that day: "It's a good song, and I think they tried to make it sound like me."

The song will likely be included during the summer tour he's excited about starting July 5 in Portland, Ore. ("The nine people I'm with are really great. It's going to be a lot of fun") and on his debut album, expected to be released in the fall.

"This is the reason I tried out for American Idol ... get someone to notice me and make a record," he says.

"That's going to happen. That's coming true."

AI_NEWS~ "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks to perform at A's game

"American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks to perform at A's game

We're all still buzzing about the battle between Kris Allen and Adam Lambert, but past "American Idol" stars have to make a living, too.

To that end, there's news that Jordin Sparks will be performing in concert after an Oakland A's game on June 6 — and the show is free with the price of the game ticket. Game time is 6:05 p.m. Pray it doesn't go extra innings.

Sparks, of course, gained fame by beating Blake Lewis in the 2007 season. This will be her first solo performance in the Bay Area. She is scheduled to join the Jonas brothers for select dates of their 2009 World Tour, which kicks off June 20.

AI_NEWS~ David Cook Tried Not To Cry During 'American Idol' Finale Performance

David Cook Tried Not To Cry During 'American Idol' Finale Performance

Last year's champ performed 'Permanent' in honor of his late brother Adam.

On Wednesday night, a year after he was crowned the American Idol, David Cook performed on the season-eight finale, when Kris Allen was named this year's champion. During his performance, Cook paid tribute to his late brother Adam with the song "Permanent."

"For the finale this year, I was floored that they would allow me to have that platform," he told MTV News. "There's so many great artists out there that could have had that moment. The fact that they had me come back and perform 'Permanent,' something that was important to me, the charity and everything, to continue to give me that platform [was great]."

He does admit that although he was grateful for the chance to sing the song and bring attention to his charity, Accelerate Brain Trust Cure, he did hope that when he went out there, he wouldn't get too emotional and cry in front of everyone. "I was kind of half-joking with everyone beforehand that I always seem to cry at 'Idol,' " he said. "I really didn't want to with this last performance."

Luckily, the show offered him some eye candy (and some old friends) to keep him from tearing up. "It was difficult, but I just remember looking around the room and seeing, like, Cameron Diaz over here and Heather Locklear over here and the four judges in the front and just thinking it's such an oddly absurd moment, and I was here a year ago," he said. "To have those, for lack of a better way to phrase it, distractions, it was just like, 'Where in the world am I at right now?' It kind of helped me get through it."

AI_NEWS~ Bikini Girl Slams 'American Idol' Judge Kara DioGuardi

Bikini Girl Slams 'American Idol' Judge Kara DioGuardi

'She just made herself look stupid; she didn't make me look stupid,' Katrina Darrell says of finale stunt.

For one brief moment during Wednesday night's "American Idol" finale, it seemed as if Kara DioGuardi and Katrina "Bikini Girl" Darrell had settled their feud when they performed Mariah Carey's "Vision of Love" together.

However, on Friday (May 22), Darrell gave an interview slamming DioGuardi for baring her bikini at the end of their performance. "I don't think she got the reaction she was hoping for. I think she probably thought I would cry or get mad, and I didn't — I played it off," Darrell told RadarOnline.com. "Looking back at the tape, she just made herself look stupid; she didn't make me look stupid."

Darrell also claimed that "Idol" producers cut off her mic when DioGuardi surprised her onstage. "I knew there were 100 million viewers, so I couldn't cry," she said. "I couldn't get mad. I just had to smile and deal with it. The show producers kind of said, 'I'm sorry.' I think they tested me. I think I did really well, considering all that I went through."

After the show, Darrell said her little sister had a nasty run-in with DioGuardi backstage. "We were walking, and [Kara] said, 'Oh, sweetie, I hope you didn't take anything personally,' " Darrell recalled. "I rolled my eyes, and my sister said, 'Hey, next time you try to upstage my sister, get a spray tan! How old are you — 45 or 50?' I looked back and shrugged. She kind of said what I was thinking but couldn't say!"

As for who looked better in a bikini, Darrell said: "Well, I'm not 50 years old, and I do spray tan!"

AI_NEWS~ Gene Simmons Says "American Idol" 's Adam Lambert Is No Rock Singer

5/22/09, 1:24 pm EST

Photo: Merritt/Getty

It seems everybody's got an opinion on this week's American Idol finale. Kiss bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons, who generally has an opinion on everything, is no different.

On Simmons's Web site, he's been answering questions from fans about the band's appearance on Wednesday's jaw-dropping Idol finale, including his opinion on this year's runner-up, the guyliner-lovin' Adam Lambert. Does Gene think Lambert has a promising career in rock 'n' rolling all night? Not quite.

"Respectfully, I don't think Adam is a rock singer," Simmons writes. "He sounds much more convincing singing ballads and Broadway shows. His voice doesn't seem to have a 'rock quality.' But, I'm sure he's going to do just fine."

When asked, based on Lambert and Allen's performances with the band during the season finale, which of the two he'd throw his own money behind as they build their careers, Simmons was succinct.

"Adam."

Posted by Bob Payne

If you live in Seattle and you're thinking about auditioning for the next season of "American Idol," the closest city to do so will be Denver.

FOX released its full list of audition cities -- but not the dates -- today. In addition to the Mile High City, tryouts will also be held in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and Orlando.

The last time an audition was held in Seattle was two years ago, and winner Jordin Sparks, runner-up Blake Lewis and finalist Sanjaya Malakar all came through the Seattle audition.

AI_NEWS~ AI's Morning-After Roundtable

Interesting comments... can't wait to download all of the full interviews later.

Kris! Adam! Simon! Randy! David! Ryan! Kara! American Idol's Morning-After Roundtable

Adam Lambert, Kris Allen, Ryan Seacrest, American Idol Ray Mickshaw/FOX

No boundaries? Not for newly crowned American Idol Kris Allen. Or even Adam Lambert, despite (or, depending on who you ask, because of) his second-place finish in last night's finale.

While neither winner nor runner-up seemed as thrilled or outraged as their respective fan bases over America's choice of a new Idol, the emotional floodgates inched open this morning. The final two, along with judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi and last year's winner David Cook, opened up about the show's outcome, the ever-sappy winner's single and, yes, the Danny Factor to Ryan Seacrest—who let loose with what's sure to be a controversial opinion of his own.

"I was numb, I was totally numb, I had no idea what to feel," Allen told Seacrest on his radio show this morning. "Adam deserves this as much as I do. It was crazy, I never thought this would happen."

It seems the winner's incredulity didn't stop when the cameras did. Neither did the mutual lovefest between Allen and his one-time Idol roommate.

"I told him, I was like, 'You deserve this,' and he was like, 'No, you deserve this.' We love each other, man. We've been friends ever since the Top 36, we were in group two together, and we both made it. I'm really proud of him, and I know that he's really proud of me as well."

And while Allen said he wants "definitely to do the pop singer-songwriter thing" with his career, it will take some time for his reality coronation to sink in. He said he has "not at all" processed his win.

Failing to process right along with him is the angry Adam faction—of which, it should be noted, Lambert himself is not one.

"I couldn't be happier for Kris," the glam rocker said. "I really, really mean that. He's one of the most open-minded, embracing of all types of people person…He's just an old soul.

"I really was prepared for anything to happen. I knew it was such a tight race between the three of us—Danny [Gokey], him and I—and I just kinda was prepared, you know."

Plus, as Paula Abdul would and no doubt has said, Lambert is already a winner.

"You know, the whole thing for me in this competition is that it wasn't a competition. It was like a platform every week, an opportunity for me to get up and do my thing for everybody. It was fun, and it wasn't about, Oh, I'm gonna beat this guy or beat that girl, it was about, Oh, I get to stay on another week to do another thing."

As for whether his outsize image or refusal to address rumors of his sexuality played a part in his losing, Lambert said he was "a little worried about it" before his audition, but said he was fortunate that fans were quick to embrace him.

"I think there's always other things in the works, you know. It's about music, but it's also the personality of the artist, about how the artist looks, how the artist dresses, it's about all of it, it's a package deal."

As for how the Idol journey has changed Lambert, he says one small tweak has taken place.

"My dad thinks I'm cooler than I was beforehand."

Meanwhile, the question on everyone's mind and blog this morning is whether or not the best man won. For the PC-savvy Idol minds, the answer was yes.

Or rather, "yes, but…"

"I have to say I wasn't surprised, and I don't mean that with any disrespect to Adam," relinquished Idol titleholder Cook said. "I don't know that either one of them would have surprised me. I don't think it's the end for either one."

That covers best man. But what about best singer?

"I don't know. Singing is an aesthetic thing for me, it kind of depends on what you like. They're both great performers."

Count on Cowell to give a more straightforward answer.

"[Kris was] probably the right win in terms of being a nice guy. Was he the best singer in the competition? No.

"If you allow America to vote, you live with the vote. I wouldn't have said he was the best singer in the competition, though. I think he was like a little puppy dog."

He didn't have quite as kind words about the winner's single, however, which happened to be cowritten by fellow judge DioGuardi.

"By the way, how awful was that song, though?" he said of "No Boundaries."

"'Mountains, hurricanes, rivers, oceans…it's probably the most clichéd song I've ever heard in my life."

Fellow judge Randy Jackson agreed.

"Let's not talk about the song, Ryan. My mom said if you have nothing good to say, don't say anything."

For the defense…

"It's a song about dreams and attaining the impossible and what these kids go through to get this far is extraordinary," DioGuardi said, turning the conversation back to the boys.

"I think that they both won. For me, this was a very interesting year, because you had such different artists. You had the soft side of rock and the hard side of rock, and it really wasn't about winning, it's about, what's your preference?"

Still, she does think there was a deciding factor to the competition and it had nothing to do with Allen or Lambert.

"I think that the Danny vote probably swung the competition," she said. "If you were a Danny fan, you probably aligned more with Kris' music."

Jackson agreed.

"Listen, I wasn't shocked, because I was also thinking Danny and Kris were kind of close in who their voters were. I think that's really what happened."

Asked where she sees the second-place artist fitting into the music scene, DioGuardi believes he has potential to follow in the successful footsteps of another Idol also-ran.

"You know, when I watched him with KISS, I almost thought, this guy could front a ridiculous rock band à la Daughtry—when you know it's Daughtry, but it's a band. He's such an incredible frontman. This is his thing, to be able to reach thousands and thousands of people in an arena-like setting. He has the voice for that. He's also learned how to pull it back and come from his heart."

Jackson, too, sees nothing but big things coming for Lambert, describing him as "Robert Pattinson from Twilight meets My Chemical Romance meets Guns 'N Roses."

"I actually think it's better for him that he came in second."

Oh, and about Seacrest's controversial weigh-in...put on the spot by Cowell (who else?) as to where he would rank Allen in the annals of American Idol winners, the host didn't exactly place him near the top.

"Probably in the middle," Seacrest said.

Falling below him? "Justin, Kelly," he presumably joked, before clarifying, "That year, that year. Who's won the show? I can't remember."

Also falling prey to Seacrest's discerning ear: "Ruben. Taylor Hicks."

Ouch.

AI_NEWS~ American Idol's 'Bikini-girl' Katrina Darrell makes two big changes - but not to her singing

American Idol's 'Bikini-girl' Katrina Darrell makes two big changes - but not to her singing

Updated Thursday, May 21st 2009, 1:17 PM

Becker/FOX; Micelotta/Getty

'American Idol' contestant Katrina Darrell, a.k.a. 'bikini-girl, in early episodes of the show (l.) and on last night's finale. Host Ryan Seacrest noted a change in her appearance.

A seemingly new and improved bikini-girl made a last minute comeback on the grand finale of "American Idol," but even her, ahem, enhancements couldn't upstage host Kara DioGuardi, who had the final word in a surprising sing-off.

To viewers who turned in early in the season and caught performances by Katrina Darrell, a.k.a. "bikini-girl," she seemed noticeably changed as soon as she stepped on stage during the final show.

Host Ryan Seacrest even greeted her with a quip as she sidled up to him: "I'd ask you what's new," he said, "but I think I know."

Seacrest made his dislike for Darnell apparent during the season, but Darnell was having none of it. She smacked Seacrest on the lips before proclaiming, "This time you kissed back."

Darrell was on the show to receieve a "Golden Idol" Award, given out to contestants who were exceptional for qualities other than their singing. She was honored for having the "Best Attitude."

Whether or not Darrell got a little help to better fill out the top of her signature garment, one thing had clearly not improved since her last appearance on the show - her singing.

Judge Kara DioGuardi snuck up behind her after she began a faltering version of "Vision of Love," proving she could far out-sing Darnell, with whom she often clashed during the regular season.

In a fitting end to the vocal throw-down, DioGuardi proved she could outmatch Darnell at her strong suit as well as the "Idol" set became the stage for a bikini competition.

DioGuardi ripped open her dress to expose her own bikini bod, before quickly covering up again.

The judge proved herself to be much more bashful about baring her figure than she is about sharing her opinions, clutching her dress shut and laughing in embarrassment.

And though the stunt was a great pay-off to the Kara-"bikini-girl" season-long catfight, it came with a price for the "Idol" producers. They had to bribe DioGuardi to take part in the stunt with a big donation to an undisclosed charity of her choice.

It was probably worth the price to have Seacrest say, "What a stomach, Kara."

Ruben Studdard reflects on 'Idol' life

(CNN) -- No one knows better than Ruben Studdard what Adam Lambert and Kris Allen face after the finale.

Season two "American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard says life changes after the show.

Season two "American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard says life changes after the show.

The season two winner of "American Idol" can bear witness to how dramatically life changes once a singer makes it to the finals of the mega-spectacle that is the show.

Millions of people tuned in to watch Studdard take on Clay Aiken in the finale of the competition. In fact, only the season five closer (won by Taylor Hicks) has drawn more viewers than the 34.2 million who saw Studdard crowned "American Idol."

Since then, much has been made of Studdard's success (or lack thereof) compared to other winners and contestants, such as his good friend Aiken.

But the Velvet Teddy Bear, as he is known, says he is very happy with his career, which has included touring in the play "Ain't Misbehavin' " in the role of the legendary composer Fats Waller along with "Idol" alumna Trenyce and almost-contestant Frenchie Davis.

Studdard said he loves what he does and is thrilled with his new album, "Love Is," a project that matched him with superstar producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

CNN spoke with the R&B crooner about his fourth album, life as a newlywed, and why fans shouldn't be surprised to see him shopping at Wal-Mart.

The following is an edited version of the interview.

CNN: Please tell us about the new album.

Ruben Studdard: I think this album is different because I got an opportunity to be me. There were really no boundaries on the things that we could do on the record. We had a clean slate and me, Jimmy and Terry were just allowed to be creative. I think this is my best body of work yet.

CNN: Were you involved in any of the songwriting?

Studdard: I wrote on basically every original song on the album. I've been a songwriter since I was in high school so it was nice to be in a situation where I was allowed to do what I do.

CNN: What's the deal with the title of the album, "Love Is"? What is love to you?

Studdard: Love is everything. My wife actually named the album. I wanted it to be "Love and Inspiration," but the label said that sounded too much like a gospel album. I asked my wife what she thought and she came up with that, so there it is.

CNN: You brought up gospel and you've done that in the past. What are you more comfortable with, gospel or R&B?

Studdard: I am comfortable with anything I sing: jazz, gospel, classical. It doesn't matter. I can do it all.

CNN: How would you classify your latest album?

Studdard: This is the album I think everybody's been asking me to do since I was on "American Idol." Everybody's always told me they felt like I was the heir apparent to folks like Gerald [LeVert] and Luther [Vandross].

As long as I stay focused, hopefully one day I will be considered just as good as Luther Vandross. That's pretty darn hard.

CNN: At this point, do you feel like you have had the career so far that you have wanted?

Studdard: I feel like I have been totally blessed with everything that I have done. This is my fourth album and that, in and of itself, is a blessing. There are artists who don't make it past album one, so I am thankful that God has given me the opportunity to do what I love, so as long as I am here I'm going to continue to work really, really hard.

CNN: Has being married now played into shaping you as an artist?

Studdard: It has, I think, calmed me down a lot and made me more compassionate and thoughtful. I'm just glad that I have somebody to share the rest of my life that really cares about me and who I know will always be there for me.

CNN: You performed on the show this season, but have you had a chance to watch "American Idol"?

Studdard: No, I'm on stage every night at 7:30 [p.m. with the tour of "Ain't Misbehavin' "] and we have been on tour since October doing eight shows a week.

CNN: Do you have any advice for whoever is the next "American Idol"?

Studdard: Just be prepared for all of the work. It might seem like it's a lot of work while they are on the show, but they have no idea what's about to happen to them. I was on a conference with some of the winners recently and that's exactly what we all talked about. Your life will never be the same.

CNN: What's the biggest way your life has changed since you won?

Studdard: Probably the ability to go to Wal-Mart without causing a scene. It's funny because you go and people are like "Why are you at Wal-Mart?" I say "What do you mean? I can't take advantage of the low, low prices, too?"
