Clay Aiken – Music Industry Woes

Posted: 17 Jul 2010 10:17 AM PDT

It is a changing world for professional musicians today. According to the latest Nielsen research, only 2.1 percent of the albums released in 2009 sold even 5,000 copies – that breaks down to just 2,050 records out of nearly 100,000.  It seems that everyone in the process really takes a big chance and needs to have a back-up plan.  The latest research also shows that the record label still takes less of a risk than the artists.

Did you know that for every $1000 we spend on music CDs, the artist only gets $23?  At the same time the record label and distributors will share $870. Wow! Something is wrong with this picture, and there are many who believe that this work formula is about to change.

It seems strange that the musician that makes the music receives a minor part of the revenue while the business that has the job of helping the artist gets the big part of the pie. This distressing data by Nielsen research was published in an article on The Root titled "The Music Industry Funny Money".

The research from this report indicates that the record labels get 63% of the music sales, the distributors get 24% and the band gets the remaining 13%. But if you look at the graph at the right, you will see that "the band" includes a whole team of people besides the musicians. Based on a performance group with 4 musicians, each of the musicians would get 18% of the 13% part for "the band" (or $23.40 for every $1000.00 in CD sales) with the personal manager, business manager, lawyer and producer getting their hand in part of the money.

Where does all the money go?  Why do the labels feel they can take so much of the money?  Here are a few of the places the money goes.  The following information comes from Don Passman, the author of All You Need to Know About the Music Business

SLRP: The suggested list retail price of a CD is currently $16.98, but retail stores have a wholesale price that is about $10. Once the retailer gets the CD, they can sell it for however much they'd like – ergo "suggested." Artist's royalties are a percentage of the retail price. The musicians get anywhere between 12 to 20 percent of the SLRP.

Packaging charge: Most Cd's are in a plastic case so the label charges the artist for the case by immediately taking 25 percent of the SLRP.

Free goods: Labels discount the records so stores will buy them.  They do it in a roundabout way.  The label will sell the retailer 100,000 for the price of 85,000.  So, if the store sells all, the artist only gets paid for the 85,000.

Reserves: Retailers don't want to lose money on the CD so they can return whatever copies they don't sell and get a full refund.  The label doesn't want to miss out on the money either so they usually pay the artist for only 65,000 copies out of each 100,000.  If all the CD's are sold, the label will pay back the musician, but it usually takes years.

Distributor: Music distributors promote and distribute records. The major labels maintain in-house distributors and the distributor can take between 14.2 to 24 percent cut of the SLRP.

Songwriter/publisher: If a musician buys the song, the writer and publisher receives 9.1 cents for every copy of the song sold. They must split that amount.

Personal manager: The manager's job is to guide the career of the artist. They get about 15 percent of the artist's gross earnings.

Business manager: A business manager charges 5 percent of an artist's gross.

Lawyer: Most lawyers charge hourly but some charge 5 percent.

AFTRA and AFM: These are the musicians unions. If an musician makes an album, he is required to join a union, which will then take $63.90 in base dues plus 0.743 percent of the artist's first $100,000.

Record advance: If the label fronts an artist $75,000 to pay for whatever he or she needs to record an album, the artist then owes the label that initial $75,000, regardless of whether the record is a success or not.

Both musicians and record labels are starting to react to the new music business market realities. Musicians are leaving record labels in droves, to work on their own. Warner Music is starting a new 360 type of contract in which they offer to manage not only the musicians recordings, but also their other business ventures like concerts tours, social media, sales of accessories and t-shirts, etc, etc. This 360 contract is supposed to balance the distribution more evenly with the musician.  This contract idea is getting mixed reviews.  The musicians do not like this contract unless the percentages change in their favor.

The music industry and, in particular, record labels need to realize that the market has changed and the time for the record labels to make all the money is over. Musicians have been jumping ship due to these problems, and they need new models where the musician gets to make and control their music. If instead of trying to prolong the status quo, the record labels get ahead of the curve and think of new models that provide more fairness in the distribution of money, they will realize that there is still enough pie for everyone.

What do you think about the amount of money musicians receive ?

AI_NEWS~ Carrie Underwood Marries Her Canadian Cowboy

No more cowboy casanovas for Carrie Underwood.

The Grammy-winning singer swapped vows Saturday evening with NHL player Michael Fisher in a lavish ceremony at the Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation, in Greensboro, Ga., according to People.

More than 250 guests were in attendance, including country supercouple Tim McGrawand Faith Hill. The ceremony reportedly featured the couple's favorite Bible verses and classical music.

The 27-year-old blushing bride walked down the aisle in a Monique Lhuillier chantilly lace gown, and her bridesmaids donned dresses by the coveted designer as well.

Security was tight all over the property, which was closed off to anyone who wasn't either employed by the hotel or instrumental in making the Underwood-Fisher nuptials happen.

Even the road leading into the hotel was closed to traffic Saturday, making it necessary for eager-beaver shutterbugs to shoot the ceremony from boats on Lake Oconee, which borders the hotel.

Speaking of privacy, the newlyweds were scheduled to spend their first night together as husband and wife in the Ritz's 5,400-square-foot Presidential House.

Here's hoping Underwood never finds a reason to undo it.

'American Idol's' Casey James on being the new 'Bachelor': 'Sign me up!'

Is it possible "The Bachelor" may actually get a marriage soon? Well, it may not be between contestants, but a marriage of wildly popular reality shows.

"Bachelor" host, Chris Harrison started a frenzy in June when he tweeted, "Casey James just agreed to be our next Bachelor. He is allowed a guitar!"

Well, Cutie Casey recently spoke with OK! magazine while on the troubled "American Idol" concert tour and they filled him in on what the job would entail: Picking from a bevy of bachelorette beauties.

"Oh, God, that sounds horrible!" The Season 9 finalist joked. "Sign me up!"

Once the apple of "American Idol" judgeKara DioGuardi's eye, it sounds like James is single and ready to mingle. So, what qualities would the handsome musician look for in the bachelorettes?

"Confident and kind," he says. "I don't necessarily have a type as far as looks go, but I love a sense of humor."

Does Casey James have your vote to be the next "Bachelor"?

AI_NEWS~ Carrie Underwood's Getting Married This Weekend!

Jul 9, 2010 @ 1:37 pm

Carrie Underwood is set to wed fiance Mike Fisher this Saturday at The Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Georgia. The lavish nuptials are reportedly being readied right now, as a large tent has been erected near the idyllic lakeside where Underwood will walk down the aisle. The country music sweetheart and her hockey-playing fiance will spend their first night as husband and wife in the hotel's Presidential Suite, which features a gourmet kitchen, a private pool and a dining room that can fit up to 16 guests. Not that they'll need to host anyone, as the couple has also reportedly blocked off all 251 hotel rooms for the occasion, according to an editor at The Herald Journal in Greensboro. What's still under wraps? What (and who) the bride-to-be will be wearing, although she did tell us about her glamorous and simple gown and the custom-made false lashes she's planning on wearing. If Underwood's past red-carpet looks are any indication, we're sure she'll look absolutely beautiful!

AI_NEWS~ 'Idol' gets fans on their feet, eventually

SUMMERFEST 2010 | MARCUS AMPHITHEATER REVIEW

'Idol' gets fans on their feet, eventually

Brad Vest

"American Idol" singers perform together for the last song during their show at the Marcus Amphitheater at Summerfest Friday.

The ninth season of "American Idol" was marked by headlines that focused more on the show's judges and slumping ratings (even though it remained the country's top-rated program) than its singing talent. That left a lineup of contestants without any early standouts.

As the annual "American Idol Live!" tour of the top 10 contestants arrived at the Marcus Amphitheater Friday night, the effect was clear. Lower interest resulted in plenty of open seats. Buy-one-get-one-free deals filled only about three-quarters of the lower, covered seating, with tweens, their parents and other reality TV fans decked out in homemade T-shirts and carrying brightly colored signs.

The pattern of the nearly three-hour concert was familiar, right down to the Ford advertisements for a chance to go backstage by sending a winning text message. Contestants chose covers to perform, with full-length songs replacing the shortened, made-for-TV hits. The few group performances were just as cheesy as they are on "Idol."

Nerves were evident from the outset - especially from the early eliminated contestants - on this second date of a three-month tour. Didi Benami's "Lay It on Me" by the Rescues, Andrew Garcia's acoustic take on Maroon 5's "Sunday Morning" and the recent high-school graduate Katie Stevens' cover of Demi Lovato's "Here We Go Again" would have deserved a verdict of "a bit pitchy, dawg" from "Idol" judge Randy Jackson.

Siobhan Magnus offered a dramatic, gothic "Fade to Black," and Tim Urban's "Viva la Vida" and his boyish smile drew a few squeals from the crowd. But it was 17-year-old Aaron Kelly, with his set of country hits, who was the first "Idol" who seemed comfortable onstage.

The show's second half affirmed these contestants' place closer to the big prize. Michael "Big Mike" Lynche's voice carried a sweet falsetto in Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work." Casey James' vocals were spot-on, but it was his fast and loose slide guitar on a bluesy "It's all Over Now" that really shone.

It was runner-up Crystal Bowersox and winner Lee DeWyze who finally got the entire crowd on its feet. Guitar in hand, the dreadlocked Bowersox was conversational as her effortless, soulful voice carried "Piece of My Heart" and 4 Non Blondes' "What's Up."

DeWyze shrugged off a broken guitar string during a reggae-tinged "Beautiful Day." Thanking the crowd, he marched around the stage for an enthusiastic cover of the Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody."

AI_NEWS~ "American Idol" tour offers 10 mini-concerts at Summerfest

Slide Show

n Summerfest Guide Reviews

"American Idol" tour offers 10 mini-concerts at Summerfest

Summerfest was just the second stop on this year's "American Idol" tour, and the biggest surprise came in the first half of the nearly three-hour collection of individual performances.

The two youngest performers in the Marcus Amphitheater show, Katie Stevens and Aaron Kelly, both 17, offered sets that showed the promise of future stardom.

Stevens demonstrated a powerful voice and a rocker girl sensibility in two songs, Christina Aguilera's "Fighter," and Demi Lovato's "Here We Go Again." On the show, she demonstrated vocal talent, but an unsure stage presence.

Kelly, meanwhile, proved himself to be a marketable country artist, with a set list that included "Walking in Memphis," and "Fast Cars and Freedom." In his "Idol" run, Kelly seemed to offer a weak pop persona.

A quirky standout was Siobhan Magnus, whose combination of a unique fashion sense and singing came with a suitably dark take on "Paint it Black," that was familiar to "Idol" viewers. She also did No Doubt's "Spider Web."

The night's biggest names, of course, came at the end of a show that featured a number of empty seats. Lee DeWyze, this year's winner, and Crystal Bowersox, the silver medalist in the ninth season of Fox's singing competition, performed songs from the show.

DeWyze offered a more emotional presence than he did during much of his run for the "Idol" crown, belting out Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," a song that should be retired for a while to avoid burning it out. He also did an entertaining take on Elton John's "Rocket Man."

Bowersox also did familiar songs, like Melissa Etheridge's "Come to My Window" and Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart."

Neither the winner nor the runner-up surprised the audience. But then, these "Idol" tours are marketed to the young audience that votes, and every one of the 10 finalists offered their profuse thanks and expressed their love to the squealing fans.

There were no tightly choreographed group numbers as in some previous "Idol" live shows, although the bottom six finalists performed a song together, as did Michael "Big Mike" Lynche and Casey James.

There was only one number featuring the entire group, the evening's finale, with all 10 joining in on Kelly Clarkson's "My Life Would Suck Without You."

While the show unfolded with the characteristic precision of an "American Idol" production, the length of the show -- nearly three hours with intermission -- was visible in the tired younger members of the audience, many of whom stopped bopping about three-quarters through the evening's entertainment.
