AI_NEWS~ American hero, idol back in Utah / Gracin sings at S. Ogden Days

American hero, idol back in Utah / Gracin sings at S. Ogden Days

By Linda East Brady

Standard-Examiner staff

AUDIO: "We Weren't Crazy" by Josh Gracin

Josh Gracin performs Saturday during South Ogden Days at Friendship Park in South Park.

Even at the dawn of Josh Gracin's national singing career, he was already an American hero.

In 2003, at the same time he was serving as one of the few and the proud in the United States Marine Corps, he was singing his way into the final four on "American Idol."

He was in Utah just a few weeks ago, playing with Darryl Worley in Eagle Mountain. After touring the Southeast, he returns to the Beehive State to headline a free concert at South Ogden Days on Saturday.

"Oh my gosh -- every time we come to Utah, it is a great turnout," said Gracin, calling from the tour bus in Fayetteville, Ga. "I know people will come out and support us, and they have a great time -- and so we do, too."

With the conclusion of his "American Idol" run, he finished his service in the Corps and then went to the studio to make a self-titled debut that went gold and landed him a No. 1 hit, "Nothin' to Lose." Two other singles from the record -- "I Want to Live" and "Stay With Me (Brass Bed)" -- also entered the top five on Billboard country charts.

He and his wife have a bustling family, with four kids ages 7, 3, 2 and 7 months. Not that family life has slowed Gracin's busy career.

He followed up his first release with a successful second effort, and is in the studio right now, in between shows, recording his third. Gracin has two new songs posted on his MySpace page -- "Enough" and, his most recent, "I Still Love You."

" 'I Still Love You' has surpassed 'Enough' in hits, which is good," he said. "I wrote that one with a bandmate of mine, which is really exciting. I'm writing a lot for the new record, which is definitely a different approach for me."

His own songs

Gracin says he is planning to have seven or eight songs that he's written on the new album, out of 13.

"You know, the stuff you write is a part of you," he said. "So you sing them a little more emotionally than you would someone else's songs, in most cases."

Gracin said he has always dabbled in songwriting, but became more serious about the craft in the last six months.

"I have hunkered down and found my own little style," he said. "Some writers have a structure, a routine, but for me, it is about playing the guitar, and then a chord progression or melody will pop in my head. I don't sit and force myself to write. I always have a guitar nearby, always playing, and something will just come up when I do. I write out of life experiences, whether my own experiences ... or (things I) watched go on around me."

He laughed. "So I am always writing, but the songs are not always good."

Country meets Motown

Even Gracin does not label what he is doing now as strictly Nashville country.

"But I don't see how you'd label it as anything else, either," he added.

A Michigan boy, he grew up listening to oldies, R&B, rock and, without a doubt, the Motown sound.

"There are a couple songs on this album really geared to that soulful sound. I have two rock producers working on this album. I look forward to what they want to do with it.

"I have to be frank -- I think Nashville has gotten repetitive in the way their albums sound. They all try to sound like pop with a country flavor, with a lot of compression on the vocals and tricks like that. I don't want that compression -- I want the vocals to sound like they are right there in the room singing to you. I love a lot of instruments and layers, but as far as heavy production, it is not needed."

To show how he is doing things a differently, Gracin uses the example of his new song "Love You Right," which he has performed for live audiences.

"It is a song with a lot of movement, and people seemed to get excited about it," he said, comparing it to his 2005 hit "Stay With Me (Brass Bed)."

" 'Love You Right' has a 6/8 waltz beat, like 'Brass Bed' did, and it is ... a cool song about a guy who said, 'I want the same thing as you -- so how do we get there?' "

Gracin said not to fear, there will also be a couple of ballads on the album "like people are used to hearing right now. But there are also different things, like an old-school Motown thing called 'I Want to Make You Cry.' "

He laughed. "It's risky. I know that this might be too much of a change of direction, but I really hope it is the right direction to go in at just the right time."

AI_NEWS~ 'American Idol' to Reair Michael Jackson Week In Tribute

'American Idol' to Reair Michael Jackson Week In Tribute
Thursday, June 25, 2009

Michael Jackson

For the first time in the network's history, Fox has announced that it will air an episode from the recently concluded season of American Idol, in tribute to Michael Jackson, who died earlier today of an alleged heart attack.

Naturally, the network will air Michael Jackson week--the first week of performances from this year's Top 13, which had them give their spin to the King of Pop's diverse catalogue, from his years with the Jackson 5 to his successful solo career.

The news was announced during So You Think You Can Dance's results show earlier; previously scheduled screenings of House and Lie to Me will be preempted to accommodate the two-hour special.

Personally, that week was one of the better celebrations of Jackson's music, and as I'll explain later, proved to be quite a revelation to me about his huge impact in the music industry, to pop culture, and to the world as a whole.  Of course, we've done something on this show before; you can take a look at what happened a few months back with the slideshow below.  And then, we'll watch it in memory of the king.

AI_NEWS~ Adam Lambert to do Kris Allen's wife's nails on tour

Adam Lambert and Kris Allen arrive for the American Idol season 8 finale.

The top 10 of "American Idol" season 8 interviewed one another during tour preparations for the Los Angeles Times. Of course, winner Kris Allen was paired with runner-up Adam Lambert, and the results were gloriously funny.

Kris Allen: Everyone's been talking about what you're going to wear on tour.

Adam Lambert: I'm wearing a jacket by Skin.Graft, and that is a company that created some of the jackets that I wore on the show. For "Ring of Fire", for the Queen number that we did together, that brown jacket --

Allen: I do remember that.

Lambert: Yeah, it's really, really, cool. It's like blue metallic leather with spikes and studs and lots of accoutrement.

Allen: I don't know what that last word means but ...

Lambert: I don't think I said it right.

And then it was Lambert's turn to Allen, and the first thing he tackled -- you know, having admitted to having a crush on Kris during the show and all -- was Allen's marriage to high school sweetheart Katy O'Connell.

Lambert: So you've been married for ... 8 months?

Allen: 9 months.

Lambert: So is she, is Katy going to come along? Or is she going to visit in certain cities? What are you guys doing?

Allen: She's going to visit some cities, come to some shows ... to hang out with you.

Lambert: We can do each other's nails.

Allen: Exactly.

Lambert: It'll be great. Good.

Allen: And she's excited about that.

Lambert: Facials ...

Allen: Yes, exactly. This whole spa treatment. And I'll just be paying for it.

Lambert: Great. For me too?

Allen:  Exactly.

Lambert: Thank you. That's what I get as runner-up. Thank you Kris.

Allen: No problem.

Lambert: Cool, very cool. What are you wearing on the tour?

Allen: I don't know.

Lambert: Surprise, surprise.

Allen: Surprise, surprise. Don't have a clue what I'm going to be wearing. I actually brought you here to see if you would help me out with that.

Lambert: And you know I will. You heard it here first.

Allen: Alright!

The 50-city American Idols Live! Tour begins on July 5 in Portland, OR and ends September 15 in Manchester, NH.

The drive was organized by the Nashville Alliance for Public Education and the Country Music Association.

The instruments will be turned over to music programs in local public schools.

Bice, of Helena, Ala., was an "American Idol" finalist.

AI_NEWS~ Danny Gokey Charity Site Not Actually Affiliated With Singer

Danny Gokey Charity Site Not Actually Affiliated With Singer

'We've never contacted Danny about our site, but we feel that he would really want this,' Joe Monaghan of DannyGokeyGear.com says.

Danny Gokey fans are no doubt aware that the "American Idol" contestant has drawn strength from the passing of his wife, Sophia, who suffered from a congenital heart condition and died following complications from surgery in July 2008.

Her death — just four weeks before Gokey's "Idol" audition — led him to establish the Sophia's Heart Foundation, which aims to "heal the hearts of children who have been touched by poverty, sickness, disease, broken families and broken dreams." Donations to the charity have provided musical instruments to children in impoverished school districts; supplied food, clothing and shelter to those in need; covered medical bills for the needy; and established 24 scholarships in Sophia's name.

Interest in the charity (and ways to donate) has also led many Gokey fans to DannyGokeyGear.com, a Web site that's selling "Designer eyewear worn by Danny Gokey" and promising to donate a percentage of the proceeds to Sophia's Heart. The only problem? The site has absolutely nothing to do with Danny Gokey.

DannyGokeyGear.com — and the accompanying DannyGokeyBlog.com — are actually the property of Colorado Web Builders, a company run by a Denver Web designer named Joe Monaghan, and are in no way affiliated with Gokey himself, or his charity, though you probably wouldn't know it by glancing at the main page of either site (there is a tiny caveat here). And that has, rather understandably, led to some confusion.

Seems many Gokey detractors see the site as him trying to cash in on his fleeting fame, or that it only lends credence to the rumors that Gokey was close to inking a deal with LensCrafters. None of that is true, according to Monaghan, who started the site as a way of supporting Gokey and Sophia's Heart.

"A couple of us in the Denver area are real big Danny Gokey fans, and we're trying to support him and his charity, so we started the site. We didn't have a lot of money to print T-shirts or anything, so we started focusing on the glasses," Monaghan told MTV News. "We started talking to places in the Denver area that sold the kinds he wore on 'Idol,' because we wanted to work some sort of deal with them. Advertise the glasses on our site, send a portion of the proceeds to charity. Soon, the TV Guide Channel contacted us because they wanted to do a piece on Gokey's glasses, and they figured we'd be the best choice because we'd be donating to charity.

"But at that point, we were having problems with some of the glasses places in Denver, because they didn't carry a brand that Danny wore on the show — Luxotica," Monaghan continued. "So I called FramesDirect, and they were interested in helping us out. So we came up with a game plan — TV Guide would direct the viewers to our site, and we would refer traffic to FramesDirect's site, where they would sell the glasses and donate a portion of the proceeds to charity."

It all sounds well and good, until the confusion started. That led many to notice that the Gokey Gear site was not endorsed by the singer in any way, which, in turn, led FramesDirect to pull any mention of the Gokey glasses from the main page of their Web site. And that's when alarm bells started going off across the "Idol"-sphere. Was this all some gigantic scam?

"To be honest, there's been a lot of misinformation out there. So to clear it up, we're not affiliated with the foundation or Gokey. They didn't ask us to sell the frames for them," Jennifer Cameron, a spokesperson for FramesDirect, told MTV News. "We were contacted by Danny Gokey Gear, and we decided to help out the Sophia's Heart Foundation. It's as if we're doing a fundraiser for them. We're not doing this to make money, and we still intend to donate a part of the proceeds to the charity."

Cameron said that FramesDirect had reached out to the Sophia's Heart Foundation to arrange ways of donating the funds, but the company has yet to receive a response. When asked how much her company would be donating, she said she didn't know, but later e-mailed MTV News a statement that said FramesDirect intends to donate "50 percent of our profit of these frame sales between May 24, 2009 - July 21, 2009 to the Sophia's Heart Foundation."

Monaghan told MTV News that he had received information on how to make a donation from "someone" at the charity, but he has yet to respond to MTV News' e-mailed request for that contact. He did say that he plans on making a donation as soon as FramesDirect sends him a total on the sales of the Gokey Frames (MTV News has also made several independent attempts to contact Sophia's Heart to verify that Monaghan had reached out to them, but those attempts proved unsuccessful), and he added that he never started either of his sites to confuse or trick people, but rather, because he felt a spiritual connection with the "Idol" contestant.

"We've never contacted Danny about our site, but we feel that he would really want this. I'm assuming he's aware of it though, because of all the media attention," Monaghan said. "There's always been a misconception about this site, and I've tried to combat it. I'm going to add a disclaimer to the main page tonight, I promise you that.

"Look, I understand that there's a lot of skeptics out there, but there's no money to be made in this. I invested $500 to 600 of my own money [in the site] and I'll probably never get it back," he continued. "I did this because [Gokey] is my favorite 'Idol' contestant. He's a Christian, I'm a Christian — we both are doing the Lord's work. I'll make that donation, that's for sure."

At press time, MTV News was unable to reach Danny Gokey for comment.

AI_NEWS~ Sources: 'Idol' star Lambert issuing album

Sources: 'Idol' star Lambert issuing album
Published: June 20, 2009 at 12:56 PM

NEW YORK, June 20 (UPI) -- Adam Lambert, who earned a fan base with his singing on the U.S. TV series "American Idol," will release an album this summer, sources tell Billboard magazine.

Billboard.com reported Friday the forthcoming album from Lambert, who came in second on the Fox series last season, will feature songs he co-wrote and recorded prior to appearing on "Idol."

"On With The Show" will be released by Hi Fi Recordings and Wilshire Records, the sources said.

Hi Fi Chief Executive Officer John Hecker praised the music from Lambert, including his first single, "Want," that is available for streaming on his company's Web site.

"The music's amazing," Hecker said. "There are some up-tempo (songs), there's some that rock a little more, and there are some songs on the same tip as 'Want.' It's a real album that's coming out, not just a conglomerate of a bunch of songs. This is all original material -- as a matter of fact, Adam wrote a lot of it."

Billboard.com said Lambert will release an album with 19 Recordings/RCA Records months after the summer release of "On With The Show."

AI_NEWS~ American Idol Season 8 CD Released June 30

http://media.mjsbigblog.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/s8-album.jpg

From Entertainment Weekly:

For the first time since Season 5, 19R will release a CD of Idol recordings from the current crop of Idols.  Season 6 and 7 featured downloads of studio recordings of the Idol's weekly live performances. The first 5 seasons had the Top 10/12 Idols record one song each for a compilation released at the end of the season. (This season's disc features only the Top 10)

The album will be available through Wal-mart, and will be available June 30.

Season 8 offered fans Idol performance downloads which were recently made unavailable. You can only download both the Kris Allen and Adam Lambert versions of "No Boundaries" now. I can't see purchasing the CD if you've already got the downloads, but I suppose it gives peeps who missed the cutoff a chance to purchase recordings from their Season 8 favorites.

Adam Lambert and Kris Allen both have 2 cuts to make way for their versions of the drecky "No Boundaries"

Not sure why they'd choose "She Works Hard for the Money" for Kris Allen. It was a great performance, but "Heartless", "Falling Slowly", and "To Make You Feel My Love" were all better… I don't have quibble with the rest of the picks. What do you think?

1. Kris Allen, "No Boundaries"
2. Danny Gokey, "Stand By Me"
3. Allison Iraheta, "I Can't Make You Love Me"
4. Matt Giraud, "Human Nature"
5. Adam Lambert, "Mad World"
6. Kris Allen, "She Works Hard for the Money"
7. Lil Rounds, "I Surrender"
8. Scott MacIntyre, "Just The Way You Are"
9. Michael Sarver, "You Are Not Alone"
10. Megan Corkrey, "Walkin' After Midnight"
11. Anoop Desai, "Always On My Mind"
12. Adam Lambert, "No Boundaries"

AI_NEWS~ David Archuleta: 'American Idol' keeps me from graduating high school

david-archuleta-0606.jpg

David Archuleta apparently won't be graduating from high school this month because he was on "American Idol."

His hometown paper, the Deseret News, has a pretty interesting interview with him where he talks about how it's tough for him to write songs, how much he likes just hanging out with his family ("I enjoy taking my sisters to eat"), and why he's not graduating:

This week, Archuleta's Murray High classmates will graduate. He won't be one of the class of 2009.

"When I joined 'American Idol,' I had to stop school," he said. "Those who were the younger contestants worked with a studio teacher, but I couldn't keep up."

Archuleta said he is working on — and hoping to — earn his high-school diploma. "I want to, but it's hard."

If you're an Archuleta fan, the interview is a must-read; it really shows what a normal, down-to-earth guy he is.

Also, I didn't even realize David's Mormon; he talks about the importance of his faith:

When asked about his own plans for serving an LDS mission, Archuleta, who doesn't turn 19 until December, said he feels as if he's already on one.

"There is so much that I want to give back to the One who has blessed me with this gift," he said about his singing abilities. "I feel that there must be a reason why I'm here, doing what I'm doing. And I want to make sure that I do what is expected of me before it all ends.

"I don't know when this all will end, and I want to make sure I do all that I'm supposed to before that happens. I have this opportunity and want to make the best of it."

What's your favorite story or piece of trivia about David Archuleta? Do you think he's going to be a major music star, or is he too normal to make it big? Tell us in the comments, below.

Universal Music Publishing Group Signs Exclusive World-Wide Publishing Agreement With Acclaimed Singer/Songwriter, American Idol Veteran, and Atlantic Recording Artist Jason Castro

LOS ANGELES, June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) today announced the signing of an exclusive worldwide publishing agreement with acclaimed singer/songwriter, Jason Castro.

The Texas-based tunesmith - best known as the third runner-up on the 2008 season of Fox's American Idol - parlayed his Idol success into a major-label deal with Atlantic Records, who signed the artist in April 2009 and will release his untitled debut album later this year. Among his creative collaborators are platinum producer/songwriter, Eric Rosse (Sara Bareilles, Tori Amos, Anna Nalick), Grammy Award-winning producer/songwriter, John Fields (Lifehouse, Switchfoot, Soul Asylum), and a number of acclaimed songwriters, including Kara DioGuardi (Kelly Clarkson, Jewel, Santana), Martin Terefe (Jason Mraz, KT Tunstall, James Morrison), Sacha Skarbek (James Blunt, Jason Mraz), Guy Chambers (Robbie Williams), and Jason Reeves (Colbie Caillat).

The multi-talented singer and guitarist, Jason Castro was among the most popular and talented artists in American Idol history, entering the record books as the first contestant ever to play an instrument on the show. His performance of the Leonard Cohen-penned classic "Hallelujah" proved such an audience favorite that Jeff Buckley's rendition of the song hit No.1 on the iTunes chart the following week, selling 178,000 digital singles, and propelling the song to Gold and Platinum status. Castro gained a chart-topping single of his own with his ukulele accompanied interpretation of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow," which also hit No. 1 on iTunes after the performance of the song on American Idol.

"Jason is an original and compelling artist that I have wanted to work with ever since first seeing him perform on American Idol," said Monti Olson, Senior Vice President, A&R, UMPG. "We're delighted to be able to collaborate with him in connection with his future work."

"From starting as a drummer and realizing that I have a passion and conviction for singing and writing songs, I am very excited to work with UMPG given their reputation and global presence," said Castro. "David Renzer, Monti Olson and everyone at UMPG have been so supportive and helpful as I embark on recording my debut album."

Castro joins the skillful hit makers on UMPG's roster which includes fellow Idol alum, Chris Daughtry, Adele, Coldplay, Feist, Jack Johnson, Paul Simon, Robbie Williams, The Killers, U2, Van Morrison, MGMT, Lilly Allen, Jon McLaughlin, and Franz Ferdinand among many others.
