Taylor Hicks' new DVD.

Grade: C-

It's so easy to dismiss Taylor Hicks, the most-forgotten winner of "American Idol" in its history. That's why I so wanted to enjoy his new concert DVD, " Whomp at the Warfield ," but I couldn't. Despite highlights like a powerful, Springsteen-esque rendition of "Hold On to Your Love" and a spare, stripped-down take on "The Fall," most of the very-blue-eyed soul arrangements fall into the awkward R&B-lite category, enough to sustain his fans (dubbed The Soul Patrol) but far from being compelling. Despite still possessing a forceful voice, being a poor man's Van Morrison doesn't cut it.
